What OS are you on Carl? It looks like Ruby sockets on *your* OS can throw yet another fantastic different exception in yet again another unusual situation that I have to cover all over again.
I'll pump out a fix in five minutes, but let me know what OS you have (exact type, version, etc) so I can run more tests later.
