I do my development on ArchLinux, and was doing original development on Ubuntu. 
 Others use:

* Solaris (with mkrf patch)
* CentOS
* FreeBSD
* NetBSD
* Win32

There are also Debian specific instructions on the site that should apply to 
Ubuntu:
