Try upgrading to Ruby 1.8.6, my mongrels were hanging too until I upgraded
my ruby, gem and rails to the latest versions and it's all working better
now.

I'm running a Linux VPS, which I think is RedHat based. ruby 1.8.4 and
mongrel 1.0.1, with Rails 1.2.2.
