'make tests' will do what you expect :). You'd want to make sure that all of your backend servers were running the same version, and do some smoke testing anyway though- my hazy recollection is that the upgrade issues with 0MQ were ugly, subtle, and handled poorly by upstream. The manual is pretty great, and I'd point you to the one on the website, but it looks like it's disappeared. You can build it yourself in docs/manual , if you have latex installed.
