Good point -- I should have posted that.  Right now it's:

check process mysql with pidfile /var/lib/mysql/servername.pid
start program = "/usr/bin/safe_mysqld --user=mysql"
stop program = "/usr/bin/mysqladmin -ppassword -u username shutdown"
if failed unixsocket /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock then restart
if failed unixsocket /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock for 5 cycles then exec "/path/to/force-mysql-restart.sh"

I think that monit mysql protocol test should detect this, ...

I will try this and report on whether or not it works.
