did you try --with-ssl-dir=/usr/local as well ? And try not specifying
incl-dir and lib-dir.
Also you could use strace to find where its looking for libssl.so..

./configure --without-largefiles \
--with-ssl-dir=/usr/local/ssl/lib \

I have the library file libssl.so.0.9.8 in /usr/local/ssl/lib.
I have tried setting the --with-ssl-dir option to various other
settings such as "/usr/local/ssl" "/usr/local/ssl/bin" etc.
No luck!
Has anyone else had this problem?
Ideas welcome!
