Hi,

the /dev/log is unix socket ... you can check it along with the process itself, 
for example:

check process rsyslog with pidfile /var/run/rsyslog.pid
    start program = "/etc/init.d/rsyslog start"
    stop program = "/etc/init.d/rsyslog stop"
    if failed unixsocket /dev/log then restart

(verify the paths to pidfile and init script are correct)
