i'm unable to reproduce the problem, using this configuration:

--8<--
set daemon 5

set mailserver xyz
set alert address@domain

check system $HOST
--8<--

The $HOST was expanded to the hostname and mail delivered.

Few questions:
1.) was your monit binary compiled from source or is it pre-compiled version?
2.) please can you send your monit configuration?
