Sudo is by far the best tool for this job. I run monit as it's own unpriviledged user too. I have also stopped letting it restart processes (passive mode) as I want to know what's gone wrong before running anything as root. Monits restart functionality will be useful in case of a persistent intermittent known bug until it's fixed.
