I have no idea why it didn't work the first time I tried that, but it
works now. Sorry for the wall of text over an apparent non-issue.

While I'm writing, let me make a feature request:
I'm using NVMe drives for ZFS cache and I'd love to be able to keep an
eye on their health with monitorix.
Graphing "nvme smart-log /dev/nvmedevice" might be convenient.
