Well, I beg to differ :-) I have a quite big application written for ASP.NET 2.0 WebForms, which made heavy use of custom controls, viewstate, AJAX Control Toolkit and an ORM library (CoolStorage) and it worked flawlessly for almost two years before being replaced by a newer version written in MVC4, mainly due to performance reasons. m.
