Well, I was thinking something wrong. It must not be related to
Dns.GetHostEntry().
Actually both sync and async tests worked on my linux machine. What's your
environment then? In case of Linux, it might be because you don't have ping
permission (try sudo mono yourtest.exe). On my OpenSUSE 10.3 environment, it
raises SocketException (Access Denied), but might be different on different
distros (no idea what would happen).
