The period is technically in the list of legal characters, however the guidelines say: "When naming packages for openSUSE, the maintainer must use the dash '-' as the delimiter for name parts. The maintainer must NOT use an underscore '_', a plus '+', or a period '.' as a delimiter. " (http://en.opensuse.org/Packaging/Naming_Guidelines) This would be the easy way to fix it, and would enforce openSUSE packaging guidelines.
