I was a little excited about this idea so maybe I can bounce a message back. I imagined a very similar response. I know that there would be some extra hoops to jump through and certainly some synchronization issues - but as you mentioned the pay off could be pretty sweet in the end.

Perhaps using custom attributes or linking directly to the files themselves. There is already so much work going into synchronizing - what would make it much harder?

Do you think that bringing this up on one of the more general lists could help?

reading the source code. Ok, so my suggestion is, via monodoc, to link in some way to the actual relevant source code from the monodoc class tree to the source tree. I bet there would be quite a positive response to this move and would provide a valuable service. In the monodoc tree

I can imagine a world of difficulties in getting this to actually work
(the biggest of which being flux in the codebase) but this would be
phenomenal if it could actually be pulled off. Really, any major open
source project that could pull something like this off would see a
huge swell in developer contribution. Getting over the critical
knowledge hump that would make me useful to the project is the main
bit holding me back.
