You can code this decision yourself, serializing the right inner variable. 
The problem will come when deserializing, if you don't have an stable root 
element for your xml (that is a restriction of Xml Schemas and xml in 
general: a xml document must have a single root element).

If you really need to take control of the process, use a XmlReader.
