I remember how confuse I was when trying to find .lib files for static libraries and learning it was .a!
Then, there was the time I was trying to name batch files *.cmd. Silly me, expecting them to work in the UNIX shell just because they had the "right" extension -- at least for OS/2 and Win NT.

i can kind of understand it, but it feels a little alien/different/inconvenient to have libs as dll instead of .so and so on.
