without wishing to start an argument (and as someone who has just gone through this exercise) not every linux machine is connected to the internet so Red Carpet etc do not work!
For security reasons, virus protection etc (particularly in govt) these sort of machines are not connected to much at all (in fact my test machine is only accessible by ftp).
