I did find a way to compile the tarballs - ignore the instructions on the box! If you follow, word for word, the instructions for mono in the tarballs, you'll find that things don't just compile. I'm not advocating my site at all - far from it. I'm advocating using svn or cvs (as was). From my experience, compiling the tarballs is not the easiest of things and moving from tarball to svn is a pain in the backside as *nothing* is mentioned about needing to install monocharge before you do the compile of the checked out sources.
