I need to have a version of mono and mcs on my system to compile the
latest svn code. Should I install the version from www.go-mono.com/daily
to do this or is there another way?

You are correct. You have upgraded your Mono VM, but not the libraries
that come with it.
You probably have two installations, I would remove both.
