We do not update the GC very regularly because we have some local
changes that make it hard, and because we need to test this extensively
before we can adopt it.
In the short term, you might want to consider passing to configure the
flag:
--with-gc=boehm
The default is "included", so this will pick a boehm GC collector
installed on your system.
