You installed and ran MonoDevelop, right? It is true that MD is fairly RAM- hungry, but this is the "fault" of MD itself, not of the Mono platform. I can only recommend to run MD on machines with >= 2 GB of RAM. Second tip: Always use the latest version of MD (2.4 final is the current one), as older versions used to be quite buggy and even more RAM-hungry.
