As far as pre-built packages of the latest stuff, it looks like 2.10 is
available for CentOS:

I have used Mono on CentOS since forever but I have built it from source all
that time.  The biggest hassle is getting the dependencies in place for
'libgdiplus' but at least they are all available with 'yum'.  I have had
issues building from time to time but for the most part Mono has always
compiled and run flawlessly on my CentOS systems.
