That's actually what I'm trying to do now, but Ubuntu in particular lists this as a 'critical' component and warns that upgrading will potentially break many things! I tried Ubuntu 11.x, but mono in it seems broken as the apps I'm using happily on 10.4LTS don't work at all with all sorts of errors. Installing 2.10 from source now on 10.4 in an alternative location. I'll see what breaks! You can install newer versions of Mono side-by-side a system Mono.
