No, technically it's not dead.

However, Attachmate / Novell still owns MonoDroid, including the name
(same with MonoTouch, but  not MonoDevelop or Mono). Attachmate/Novell
are providing no support, including "help, I need to reset my
license!" or even a basic function like replying to any emails. So it
might as well be dead.

But you are right - Miguel and co - aka Xamarin - are coming out with
something new "soon" (6 months or so for MD, 3 for MT). Their stated
aim is 100% source compatibility, however it's a new product, and has
nothing at all to do with Attachmate / Novell or MonoDroid/MonoTouch
(and, I suspect, can't legally be called or mention
MonoTouch/MonoDroid by name)
