My opinion is that errors should be caught as early as possible. The normal order of error detection is compiler, build, deployment, run time. There is a large increase of the cost and difficulty of error correction as you go down this sequence. As they say: "More computing sins are committed in the name of efficiency (without necessarily achieving it) than for any other single reason - including blind stupidity."
