When I was using eclipse, their designer was crap. I just learned how to do
this by hand. It's not really hard, and a lot of times, is faster than
fighting what _any_ designer wants you to do. The thing is, if you don't
know enough about android xml design, you aren't gonna do it right in the
designer (except the most basic things) anyway. I carried this over to when
I was doing mono project. I never used their designer, I just edited the
files manually. If you _do_ get too frustrated (don't get mad at me jon for
saying this) use the eclipse one as a starter designer then copy the xml
over.

I recommend this pdf for instruction on how to do it by hand or
progamatically. Again, I just like to offer alternate solutions.
