As Miha noted, there is Intel hardware acceleration available for the Android
emulator:

Unfortunately, it's restricted to Intel CPUs...
What would be "interesting" is some kind of benchmark comparison between
VirtualBox and the accelerated Android emulator...
However, does VirtualBox _work_ with Mono for Android? I'm not entirely sure:

Signs point to something being very strange when running under VirtualBox which
will require more investigation. At this time, I can't recommend it.
