The work of this branch is now complete: there is fully operational code to generate "format 2" bookkeeping directories, with _MTN/revision a serialized revision instead of just an ID, and no _MTN/work; there is also fully operational code to migrate from old directories, and tests for that functionality (tests/migrate_workspace).
I'm on the road and don't have time to merge up to mainline, sorry.
