In February, Nathaniel requested that all contributors to the manual agree to relicense their contributions under the GPL (>=2) instead of the GNU FDL.[1] I will recap his reasons:
> Now, it turns out that [the FDL] is a lousy license, that is probably not > even DFSG-free[2]. It certainly has a whole host of obnoxious > practical problems; in particular, it is never possible to move text > from code into documentation, or vice-versa -- the GFDL and GPL are > entirely incompatible licenses. > So we want to change the license on monotone.texi to be GPL. The FSF has issued revisions to both GPL and GFDL since then, but it is my impression that these revisions solved neither the GFDL's freeness issues nor its incompatibility with the GPL, and going GPLv3 is not something I would propose right now, anyway. I'm interested in bringing the command-reference part of the manual in sync with the --help texts, so I'd like to pick up the ball on GPLing the manual. Almost everyone who has ever changed the manual has agreed to this, but there are a few people who haven't. If you are getting this as a direct mail instead of via the list, then you made more than a couple lines' worth of changes to the monotone manual at one time or another, but I do not know if you have agreed to relicensing. [3] I ask you: PLEASE REPLY TO THIS EMAIL, CC'ING [email protected], AND SAY THAT YOU ARE FINE WITH YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS TO monotone.texi BEING RELEASED UNDER THE GPL (v2 or later).
