Ive just had a voicemail from Novell! (I requested a callback)

The chap who left the message says that it is his understanding that the
activation servers will not be switched off. He was from sales though so he
has forwarded my request for info to Customer Services.

In the meantime he says I should request a callback from:
http://support.novell.com

as that may be a quicker, which I have now done. I'll update here with any
news I get.
