As someone mentioned on one of the irc channels, Xcode 3 does not appear to be part of Apple's plans going forward with iOS 5.
Relying on Apple not changing the tools so that Xcode 3.2.6 IB can still be used to work with xibs for MT builds is a fragile proposition.
