Yep, I added one web reference a week or so ago, and its just got duplicated hundreds of times in my .csproj file…. just removed them with text editor and my real .csproj file size is 26KB. Also noticed that when I removed web references from my project in MonoDevelop it didn't remove anything from my .csproj file. :(
So looks like there's a bug somewhere - MonoDevelop or MonoTouch re: web references. I'll try re-adding the web reference and report my findings, but something is creating the duplicates that just fills the project file until gets so large that everything just groans under the weight/size of it. Ta for help though, got me moving again.
