David Lynch's "psychogenic fugue" takes viewers down the lost highway
of identity, memory and metaphysical terror in this complex tale of a
young couple, Fred and Renee (Bill Pullman and Patricia Arquette) who
are stalked via videotape by a mysterious man (Robert Blake) who may
have designs on their souls. As film-noir conventions of mistaken
identity, shadowy doubles, treacherous femme fatales and hidden
agendas begin to pile on top of one another, this enigmatic thriller
morphs into a feverish dream in which nothing is as it seems, and
identity is as flimsy and deadly as a kiss blown by a dangerous dame.
