"A woman in trouble." Thus reads director David Lynch's own synopsis of his surreal epic, INLAND EMPIRE. Looking for a more detailed explanation of this film's "story" may cause temporary psychological damage and/or permanent insanity. A blonde actress (played with astonishing intensity by Lynch-regular Laura Dern) lands her greatest film role to date in a big budget remake of a doomed Polish production that was never completed due to the mysterious murders of its two lead actors. Soon, the actress's world is spinning out of control as her "real" life begins to merge with that of her fictional character, as well as a mysterious third character that may or may not be a past-future version of the actress herself in some sort of alternate universe (...don't ask). The floodgates are soon opened for an onslaught of indescribably bizarre situations: a sitcom featuring humans in bunny suits, a parallel story set in a wintry Poland, a houseful of dancing streetwalkers, screwdrivers in stomachs, menacing Polish carnies, and much, much more. Just make sure to stick around through the closing- credit sequence, which offers adventurous viewers one of the best movie cappers in recent memory. Welcome to the wild world of David Lynch ... a strange place to visit, but definitely worth the trip.
