Not tested in IE yet, but so far I've -indeed- found out that it's all synchronous. I can run the fx init after calling the function that creates the simple elements (4 or 30 doesn't matter).
I remember working on a site in 20008 though where (at least for IE) I had to put in some delays here and there to get things working.
