At the time 2.2.0 DatePicker was/still a good calendar control
(loosely using word control).
DatePicker is easy to implement, nice functionality, and display
choices.  Plus it was developed by you (Aaron "Clientcide") and this
fact weighed on the decision, probably for many users or your tools,
as some forge "controls" may not be supported or enhanced as your
tools are.
