Not quite. I can't make merchandise (like mugs or posters) out of it (actually maybe I can, but that is a gray area, one of many). I CAN do a history of a genre of movies in book form without permission, assuming someone has proof of ownership of an image (another gray area).
Most of the leasing I do is directly to studios releasing the movies, so there is no question of ownership (well, not quite; the estates of the stars or artists could start a legal battle).
If I am auctioning an item, I can run a picture of that item in the auction catalog, no matter who owns the image.
