It's true.

Radio interviews regarding this story quoted Lustman saying
he intended to have a panel discussion after the film,
discussing the film's place in cinema history along with the
films history regarding race relations as well as how things
have changed in Hollywood since. In the same story, a
representative of the local/L.A. NAACP was quoted as saying
he "doesn't believe in censorship but that film should not be
shown". He went on to say they could not accept the idea of
showing that film without any context or discussion. The story
you quote, which comes from Studio Briefing, doesn't
mention the panel discussion and I don't know if any of the
other press about the event, before or after it was cancelled,
did either. For that matter, Birth of a Nation is quite long as I
recall, which would make a screening and panel into a Really
Long evening.
