In spite of my tendency to be introverted and shy... I promise to try and be more outspoken and assertive with this group. Please bear with me... This is my first such attempt...
You people make me laugh. What a load of crap. This kind of delusional, and mass-enabling generally only achieves this level of proficiency in a friggin crack house. How am I doing?
Who the Hell are we kidding? How many of you would admit to your neighbors, or 'entire' family the true amount of money you have 'invested' in paper? How many have a car that is worth less than your posters? How many have a house that's worth less? How many have less invested in their retirement than in Lobbies? How many lack health insurance, but have lots of 50s scifi paper?
One guy actually talked about the virtues of paper being such that it would be noble to eat macaroni & cheese for a year to buy one lobby card? Do the words... hungry, gout, malnutrition, and veggie-pizza ring a bell?
A well-known dealer (not a collector)... suggested that the purchase of a single lobbycard for $46,000 had a built-in component of passion... and that it somehow "validated the entire hobby" Look... I've known people that were passionate about opiates, and they would often spend vast sums on their 'passion' at the same time... having more invested in this 'passtime' than in their... automobile house health insurance ... perhaps even eating macaroni & cheese, risking malnutrition to let the... good times roll!
The truth is that the 'collecting' of 'things', and organizing them into 'complete sets', obssessing over that 'last one you need'... until you get it... Then it's the 'next one that you really need'... lusting, imagining, and obssessing over it for weeks, months, years?
This activity is just that, an obssession, an irressitible impulse to own 'a complete collection' of something the definition/completeness of which is an optical illusion, a mirage... Why? Because the active collector never "completes" his set... He always 'readjusts' the parameters to keep completion just beyond his/her reach. This is demented behavior!
How do I know all of this? Remember what I said yesterday about never having spent more than $50 on a movie poster in my life. I'm a lying a-hole. That guy was right about me! I'm a sick, demented, out-of-control whacko, on a... life-long... lost-weekend... and I promise to never try and rationalize it as noble ever again... I am a poster collector... There, I admitted it! -Donnie
