Sorry, but I do think you're (partially) wrong....  New technology tends to IMPROVE demand for movies.  For instance, television was supposed to kill movie theatres altogether.  Who would go to a theatre when they could stay at home and watch it on tv?  The studios were shaking in their boots.  But, it never happened.  In fact, it gave them another outlet to sell their product.  And, it gave them a far wider audience - who then went to the theatre to watch more movies.

Same thing when the VCR was introduced.  It was supposed to kill movie theatres.  Again, the studios were scared to death.  But, it didn't.  It let people watch movies in their own homes - and IMPROVED demand to see such things in the theatre.  Same thing will happen with HDTV and the Internet (although the studios and record companies are FAR too short-sighted to realize that).

Although, I sure would like to see some quality IMAX 3-D movies!

Good day all,

Bob
I was thinking (I'm probably wrong) that in the near future, High Definition Wide Screen TV's and home theatre systems will become the norm. People will stay home more than they do now and going out to a movie theatre less. It might move the film makers to do more films in IMAX 3-D or a Cinerama like film fomat that you can't get with your home theatre. This will make the Cinerama and 3-D posters more valuable as people are getting into the history of film making.

It depends what's in your collection. Universal Horror and classic films should hold their value over time but you have to fear the loss in value with lesser known material. People will pay top dollar for what they know and love as a child; the older they get the more they want to hold on to the past. It is a fact that taste change over time and collecting patterns change with those taste. An example outside the realm of movie posters for a minute - take the Model "T" Fords, 20 - 25 years ago they were bringing top dollar - a friend of my father's paid 40 grand for one in top condition. His son just sold it for 12 thousand about two years ago. Why? Generation gap. The people who will buy an antique car today are looking for the nostalgia of their past, not their father's past. I wouldn't be caught dead in a Model "T" - give me a muscle car from the late 60's to mid 70's - a M! ustang brings in the top dollar these days...still a Ford but the collecting pattern has ch!
anged. But bring in classic - they still hold their value, say roll up a 32 Dusenburg on the auction floor and a king's ransom it will bring.

The same will be true for movie posters I'm afraid...sure you'll find an avid collector here and there...somebody did buy that Model "T", be it at a loss but somebody did buy it.

Right now you see a trend in high prices for posters from films in the 70's. Why? Its been 30 years. A trip down memory lane..."God I loved that movie when I was in college". 10 years ago you could of snapped up an "Easy Rider" one sheet (such an ugly poster...or is it?) for a pretty price. Today - look at the latest auction results. Just wait to see what a "Top Gun" one sheet will bring in a few years.

Yeah its nice to know something you collect has a certain value but you have to decide: are you collecting for the fun of collecting or for the invest! ment. If its for the investment then invest wisely and follow the trends. If you're collecting for the fun then join the club and enjoy your collection. And should the two meet - more power to you.

A related scary thought....have been to a few shows recently...dealers say
they are either selling less of or getting less money for their vintage
material.
with the exception of universal horror. I'm 50 and I am wondering if i
decided to sell my collection 10 to 15 years down the line who would be
intersted buying it? My own children the younget who is 14 never heard of
90% of the movie titles that i have bought material on. Would like to hear
what the community thinks...best alan

Well folks it looks as if the world needs some more newsworthy items
showing a movie poster or two going for 50 thou and above live the King
Kong and so forth to bring new blood into the business and hobby.

Slowly but surely the prices slide and the posters that dealers ask $100
for at the shows can be had on ebay for under $30 buck and thats "if they
sell"
