Dear Glenn,
Love it!!  That's so ridiculous it could happen.

I was promoting an airing of Puccini's opera, "La Fanciulla del West"  (The Girl of the Golden West), based on the "realistic" play by David Belasco (who's Madame Butterfly had intrigued Puccini a few years earlier) on Mississippi Public Broadcasting.  I referred in the promo to the opera as "the original 'Spaghetti Western.'"
Wouldn't you know!!  A woman (with an Italian name I never learned) in MY hometown of Vicksburg, called the Italian Anti-Defamation League (or whatever their title is) and complained that the term (which she had never heard) was "demeaning" to herself and Italians.  The rep called the station where he was informed that the person who wrote the promo had an Italian background.  They didn't care.  They said it was demeaning!
When asked about it I told my supervisor to suggest that, in the absence due to death of genre-founder Sergio Leone, that perhaps the League should contact the worst offender in the US-- actor/director/ex-mayor Clint Eastwood!!  And tell him ALL about it.
I was told that I didn't have to stop using what was a common term of the day.  And I didn't!
Joe B.
PS-- Turned out that the woman who complained didn't like my family!!!!

As an Italian American, third generation, born in this country, and not being able to speak a word of Italian, I would like to see all scenes with Chico Marx and Henry Armetta cut.  I find thier over the top Italian portrayals patently offensive... The first on the list is the Marx film THE BIG STORE, it has them both...

(And a further note to those who don't get it... Tongue is planted firmly in cheek!)
