Tom - For really
severe depression, I thumb through a 500 page Larry Edmunds Bookshop
catalogue from the early 70s. Yup, feel the need to whip up a good case of Pass
the Razorblades, just get this off the shelf and spend 5 minutes in the poster
section... and remember Edmunds were the MOST expensive dealers in this stuff at
the time.
Here's just one.... either a
half sheet or insert of SOME LIKE IT HOT... $8.95 each.
But it's all relative to the
times - I can still remember (this poor old brain) hum-and-hawing during one
NY-SF-LA poster trip over whether I would take the FORBIDDEN PLANET one sheet
that was $90, or the slightly better one that was $150... and the other dealer
down the road had one at $100. And, oh my, but $200 seemed a lot of money
for a DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL 22x28.
Was there any rush to go
spend a grand on that rolled KING KONG Insert that week in NYC? There
was a rolled half sheet somewhere else for the same money and a folded
insert for $600 - a lot of money in the 70s.... or sitting in a SF coffee shop
argy-bargying a trade for a LETTER one sheet for CREATURE FROM THE BLACK
LAGOON one sheet... because back then a LETTER was a hotter title. Of course
Blacky won the day, because back then (with some exceptions) people collected
what they liked and loved and knew, and not what it was worth... although one
trade I heard of - a KING KONG insert for KINGS OF THE SUN insert left me
somewhat gob-smacked. Ah, the great old days. Now where's that corn-cob pipe and
bottle of gin?
