It is an interesting thing. The movie itself is not all that common. I have kept my laserdisc player for films that never made it to DVD and INCREDIBLE SHIRNKING MAN is one of them. (Another is BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN - while the DVD has great extras, the DVD is VERY harshly cropped at the top (even the glowing crucifix in the blind hermit scene only shows the lower half of the crucifix with and the crossbar is missing - so you have kind of a glowing short stick). So I watch the dvd for the extras but the laserdisc for the movie.
Anyway (sorry for the sidebar) INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN never really got the respect it deserves. It is an amazing film. It was wonderfully thoughtful in the social issues it presented with the marriage problems such a situation would present. And the couple of scenes with April Kent, whom Carey starts a relationship, with as he is now considerably shorter than his wife, add a great deal. The spider and cat scenes can't be beat to this day - not so much in special effects (which were astonishing for 1957) but in the careful examination of what exactly one WOULD do and HOW would such be executed. And for the sense of aloneness these scenes conjure up. The fact Richard Matheson wrote the screenplay says a lot. Matheson was responsible for Karl Kolchak (aka The Night Stalker), wrote many of the classic Twilight Zone episodes, wrote Spielberg's DUEL - well this is a movie poster list so suffice it to say Matheson is quality! :-)
So what we have here is probably one of the true classic sci-fi radiation films of the 50's. Not an outer space film or a film about alien invaders. But a film that examines in fine detail one particular situation (what can happen when you get smaller and smaller) and does not exploit that premise but give studied thought to it.
BTW - there is apparantly a remake based on Matheson's story currently (or potentially) in pre-production. It will be interesting to see how this impacts both the poster sales and the possibility of a dvd release.

Interesting. I missed the other times it was offered because I don't frequent eBay all that much anymore (naturally I prefer MoviePosterBid.com...) but I thought that $999 was a "reasonable" starting bid -- and yet you say it has been listed for lower than that and still no takers? Odd, I would have guessed that with the current inflation in classic '50s and '60s sci-fi posters that this item on linen, even with a couple of minor spots would easily fetch at least a grand, perhaps significantly more. Any dealers out there care to suggest what sort of price range this one sheet should go for? It can't be all that common.-- JR----- Original Message -----From: Randall PetersenSent: Monday, January 03, 2005 12:10Subject: Re: [MOPO] Incredible Shrinking Man OS on linen for $999 (?)Actually, you do see this everyday. He's listed this piece repeatedly over the last 6 months at least, every time with a higher starting bid than the last. A friend and I have been laughing about it. He probably would have sold it long before now if it didn't have some uncorrected defects despite being backed, and if he took paypal.
