Believe it or not, I suspect are quite a few people just don't realize
that if they place the minimum bid it will knock out the Buy It Now option and
turn the auction into a standard one that will run out to its official end time.
But most are probably watching multiple items and trying to decide which they
will commit money to and which will have to be relegated to "maybe next time"
and so they don't want to place any bid until they either decide or see how they
fare on items they have already placed bids on earlier. Most bidders don't
have unlimited funds and have to budget themselves. But you're right -- if the
Buy It Now is a real bargain and you want the item, you should snap it up before
someone else does.
You're also right about most items on eBay now selling with just one bidder
these days -- this is why I think it is funny when people complain about www.MoviePosterBid.com and say "well,
you don't have a large enough bidding audience to generate competitive bidding
on my items." As if competitive bidding was still something that happens with
most items on eBay. It just doesn't happen that much any more. MPB makes it
cheaper to set a high minimum or reserve or Buy It Now to make sure that you get
an acceptable price from that one bidder.

Got to get back to an original discussion here. I have the famouse Carmen
Miranda daybill that the aussie Fan had reproduced because of his love for
Carmen Miranda. On an original daybill you will see a wax type backing which
was how the daybills were made so that the paper would withstand the stone
printing but the fake had regular paperlike backing. Nevertheless, it is a
beautiful poster and framed would make an awesome find so I put it on ebay at
12.95 so go look at probably the only real Aussie repro daybill, a rarity in

And next let's talk about "watchers". You know those folks who add the
"add to my watch list" on eBay. I had Friday the 13th and Asylum on there for
low prices especially the buy it now. So as the day and night wore on I saw
the "watchers" gather, like the buzzards in the old Westerns. Fri the 13th had
5 or 6 watchers. Then suddenly BOOM! Someone saw the
ridiculous low price and bought both of them, knocking the "watchers" out of
the water. I don't know why anyone doesn't place an opening bid, knocking
out the buy it now and if someone bids higher then decide to bid again or
forget it. Usually these days most items go for the opening bid anyhow.
