Over here in Germany payment by direct bank transfer is also the standard.
Most banks will run your personal checking account for free, and also bank transfers are free of charge to both parties. Since we have the Euro, it is also possible to make free bank transfers to anybody in Euro-land.
Things are quite different in the US, my US bank charges me over $20 for a direct transfer.
