Whenever I gab on and on about auctions and competing bidders that I hate and all that tripe, my thursday night dinner pal, Gordon, always chokes back a laugh and then trots out two or three great stories of the shill bidding that is boldly naked (to certain insiders, I suppose) in the thoroughbred horse racing and breeding business of which he's been involved in as a fan and insurance representative for close to 45 years.  To think it isn't a good solid part of any hobby where money and passion collide is to be a complete moron with money hanging out of your pockets.  It's hard to think of something easier to set up when you have phone bids, online bids and floor bids competing in such an anonymous way.  There is no perfect answer, of course, but admitting there's a problem is the first step!

I suggest buying from well known dealers only and I suggest those dealers drop their current prices by 50% starting now...the UK/European ones will have to go closer to 80%.  That's a joke people...I'm the cheapest poster buyer that you and yours know.  I am not ashamed.

All the best,
Michael

Now... now... fellas, let's play nice. Let's have no casting of aspersions. No one shills, that's paranoia on the part of losing bidders. No one ever overpays for anything -- you can always just not bid, right? It's been proven by government laboratories that the fact is that everyone has better packaging, pictures and descriptions than everyone else. Heritage buffs are out in force lauding the catalog and asking leading questions about the upcoming event... Bruce backers will be doing the same shortly as his next event approaches... And the idea that someone (men in yellow coats, perhaps?) might shill bid on multiple items using a portfolio of identities developed over the years without the knowledge of any given Auctioneer or Auction House, why that's just science fiction. They would know if someone tried that. Just how I don't know personally, but I'm sure they must have some way and so can reassure us with absolute certainly that it can't happen here. Private auctions are for our own protection -- privacy is a good thing (it says so in the U.S. constitution). The suggestion that private auctions might somehow be used to hide something is just sour grapes on the part of those who can't afford to pop for another couple hundred bucks on that last bid. Copying someone's format is the sincerest form of flattery, after all. As for the best strategy to employ when bidding on a crazy format of "now you see it on eBay... whoops,  now you don't... but hey, look, it's actually closing over here somewhere tomorrow..." ? Oh come now, you really want to know my thoughts on bidding on an setup like that? Look, it just so happens that everyone almost always overpays at these Major Events for almost everything because... well... because that's just the way it is. Big-time auctioneers and auction houses are the long-suffering, beneficent GODS of the MOVIE POSTER UNIVERSE and the rest of us should just shut up and open our wallets and kiss our bank accounts goodbye. Bidders are such ingrates and cry babies. -- JR... in full Poster Curmudgeon mode and not feeling apologetic about it at all, folks... "He's had his three posts for the day, get him outta here!" "Forget about it, Jake... It's MOPOtown..."
