Hi Evan!  I agree with you on this one and I was extremely pleased when Johnny Ramone approached me with the same intentions.
I asked my wife once, if I were to suddenly pass away, would she keep any of the posters I've collected since I was 12 years old?  After all, these posters mean a lot to me and have defined a major portion of my life.  I've enjoyed collecting them and have actually made them my main source of income over the last 20 years. Her answer was- she would keep one to remember my passion for them.  Which one?  It wasn't one that was the most expensive in my collection nor one that I was particularly attached to.  It was one that she liked the best.  And I thought that was great! Keep what you like.
As for the rest of the collection, let it go back to the collectors.  These are the people that have saved posters from destruction and have preserved them for future generations.  These are the people that have true appreciation for them and enjoy sharing their passion for collecting with others. Let's look at it from another perspective; I don't collect toys, train sets, coins or stuffed toy bears.  I don't collect dolls, stamps, Disneyana or telephone pole insulators.  I have absolutely no interest in these areas, yet I understand other collectors passions for these items. If I suddenly inherited a collection of them, I would be more than happy to sell them to the collectors that loved them. And I would probably use the money to go buy what I love, which is more posters!
I don't expect my wife and two daughters to have the same love for movie posters that I have. I hope that when I'm gone they will pass these "treasures" on to those that appreciate them.  And I really hope they take the money they make from them and use it for something they want.  The collectors out there that buy my posters will "know" how much effort went into acquiring them, just like you all know how much Johnny Ramone worked to acquire his collection.
And in answer to someone else's question about, "how did Johnny Ramone find his posters?"  Well, Johnny scoured shows in the Los Angeles area and he frequently purchased posters from a number of dealers.  He also went to Los Angeles auctions and really looked online for material. He used every source he could find because he wanted to find that elusive item for his collection.
A lot of time, effort, money and TLC went into his collection.  Enjoy it as much as he did!
