First, I do not know about Rich and JR but take this to the bank, you
can remove Ralph from the list of potential $25k poster buyers. So far
my maximum purchase has been in 3 digits. There are too many fantastic
posters in this range to branch out to high price items. The only high
priced poster I ever had sold for $6500 and I paid $300 for it. There
are too many stone litho beauties out there for me to invest in $25k+
posters. Right now if I cannot afford the one sheet, I buy the insert
or half sheet. If I cannot afford them I go to lobby cards or Belgian
posters. If someone has the funds to buy these posters, more power to
them. But if i were buying with investment in mind, I would probably be
broke. I always hope to make a buck or two but only as a bonus to my
enjoyment of the history, beauty and color of the posters themselves.
If you saw my meager collection, you would understand. They are great
looking posters but none in the high end range. I have seen too many
hobbies where values went south as collectors aged and new collectors
wanted things from their childhood and not mine. Perhaps movie posters
will be an exception because of the movies themselves. I do not know.
But I look at the list of movies being brought out on DVD and a very
small percentage are classic films. I would hate for my children's
future to depend on the fickle buying public. To give a example, at
one point I collected as well bought and sold character collectibles
from Superman, Tom Mix, and others. Fifteen to twenty years, items
sold well at high prices. I sold a Superman premium ring for $20k. Now
todays collectors want things they remember as children such as Star
Wars. That same ring will bring $4k if you are lucky. So collect the
posters you like and enjoy them. If they go up in value, that's great.
If they do not, you still enjoy them. Also remember, you have to find a
buyer at the high price to make any money. Also make sure that your
family knows how to dispose of your collection if something happens to
you. I have a list of reputable sellers for my spouse to contact in the
event they need to be sold. Auction houses are included.
Right now I am watching my DVD of Gaslight and sneaking a peek at my
lobby card of the same title and wishing that I had gotten the insert
that sold in the Heritage auction. Hmm
