I find it interesting that there have been quite a
number of posts on mopo about Bruce and the suspension. However, not a
single word has been written on mopo about the fact that all of
the auctions were made "private" and therefore it was no longer
possible for the public to see who was
bidding.
I always place myself in the other party's shoes
in order to get a better understanding of the situation. Let's place
ourselves in the shoes of ebay. Ebay has endured much criticism
about fraud on ebay, of which shill bidding is one type of fraud. Let's
face reality. Ebay most likely felt that the public no longer could see
who was bidding and therefore they investigated all bidding under the private
auction format to protect itself. Even the slightest hint of
possible shill bidding under a private auction format could not be allowed by
ebay. Ebay is very sensitive to criticism (especially now that
the stock has been dropping) and a huge private auction each week leaves them
vulnerable.
Bruce said the bidding by his employee
has been going on a long time so why look into it now? Why,
because of the "private" auction format for 1000 items every week on
ebay.
I could be wrong but I think the private auctions
triggered their investigation and had Bruce not gone to the private format he
would still be on ebay today.
