hi there
This poster turns up pretty often, especially in
American and British poster auctions. It is always catalogued as being
from the original British release.
The original American posters show the U.S.
distributor as Avco-Embassy. United Artists handled all the foreign
(non-U.S.) distribution of the film. Therefore, there is no problem about
this poster showing UA as distributor.
But, if you look closely at the UA logo, there is a
big problem after all. UA had a circular logo from 1967 to 1970 with the
slogan "United Artists a Transamerica Company." In either 1970 or 1971
(maybe some other Mopoer can help me pin down the date?), posters for UA films
got a new logo---the circle was no longer used, and a T-shaped letter
(representing Transamerica, the company that then owned UA) was to the right of
the name United Artists.
That is what is on this poster. This poster
has been offered again and again as an original British quad. Given the
fact that this film came out in 1967, I think it is ridiculous to assert that
THE GRADUATE did not get to the UK for a minimum of three to four years
later.
As a result, I believe that this poster, which is
always sold as original and for quite a bit of money, is a reissue. And I
would like to know if British collectors and dealers on mopo have ever seen a
true British quad for this important film?
